What is march birthstone?

March has two birthstones: Aquamarine and Bloodstone.

Aquamarine:

  • Appearance: A light blue to bluish-green variety of beryl. The color can range from a very pale, almost colorless blue to a deep, vibrant blue-green. The intensity of the color is often related to the amount of iron in the stone.
  • Meaning/Symbolism: Associated with serenity, calmness, courage, and youth. It's believed to enhance communication, promote happiness, and protect sailors.
  • Hardness: 7.5-8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, making it relatively durable for everyday wear.
  • Care: Generally requires minimal care. Clean with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners.

Bloodstone:

  • Appearance: A dark green chalcedony with red spots, resembling drops of blood. The red spots are typically iron oxide inclusions.
  • Meaning/Symbolism: Associated with courage, strength, and vitality. It's believed to enhance energy levels and promote healing. Historically linked to Christ's crucifixion, representing his blood.
  • Hardness: 6.5-7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, slightly less durable than aquamarine.
  • Care: Similar care to aquamarine; gentle cleaning with soap and water is recommended. Avoid harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures.

Choosing between aquamarine and bloodstone is a matter of personal preference. Both are beautiful and have rich histories and symbolism associated with them.
